Burn Program Manager - 40 hour Day - BWH Division of Trauma,
Burn, Surgical Critical Care & Emergency General Surgery

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Burn Program Manager is a nurse leader who possesses clinical
expertise in the adult burn patient population. The ideal candidate
will serve as the expert regarding the inpatient nursing care of
the burn patient; develop, implement and evaluate clinical
guidelines and educational programming; engage in burn outreach and
community burn awareness and prevention activities with the
guidance of the Injury Prevention Coordinator; and participate in
burn research initiatives.
Other responsibilities include patient education and discharge
planning, and coordination of care in collaboration with Care
Coordination and the Patient Navigator of the in-patient burn
population. Administrative responsibilities include management of
the burn registry, participation in research activities, providing
training and lectures at partner institutions or community groups,
and participating in quality improvement projects or
activities.
The Burn Program Manager is also a member of the direct care team
and may provide direct care to patients in the outpatient
setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
This individual is identified within the hospital as the nursing
expert in burn-related issues and serves as a resource for clinical
practice, education, quality assurance and continuous improvement
in the care of the injured patient. This person establishes and
maintains collaborative relationships with all disciplines and
departments necessary to create optimal patient outcomes and a
professional practice environment. S/he partners with medical
leadership to set mutual goals that advance teamwork,
interdisciplinary learning, and the environment of care.
Specific Areas in which the Burn Program Manager leads, manages,
facilitates, or coordinates:
- Actively supports and participates in an effective Quality
Assurance Program that is designed to monitor the quality of health
care delivered to patients/families cared for on the Burn Service.
The distinct goal of this program is to ensure that the highest
quality of care is consistently delivered to the patients at all
times and by all personnel.
- In collaboration with the Burn Medical Director and Quality
Manager, Trauma and Burn Programs, coordinates the assessment and
analyses of existing hospital-wide patient care policies,
protocols, and practice management guidelines pertinent to the care
of the burn patient/families.
- Assists in the development of evidence-based protocols and
nursing skills competencies aimed at elevating the practice of the
burn unit RNs; develops and implements nursing education programs
and in-services specific to the burn patient population.
- Ensures that linkages with clinical initiatives, performance
improvement, and burn education are aligned with TBSCC's
mission.
- Participates in strategic planning for the Burn Program in
alignment with the organization's mission. Coordinates new ventures
that may serve to increase volume and expand relationships.
- Assists in ensuring the Burn Service meets all regulatory
requirements for ABA Burn Center accreditation.
- Assists in data collection for the Burn Registry including but
not limited to BQIP quality metrics for mandated quarterly
submission to the National Burn Quality Program.
- Manages the oversight of the regulatory compliance of the Burn
Registry.
- Serves as a liaison to the administration and represents the
program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and
foster optimal burn care management.
- Participates in local, regional, and national initiatives and
conferences as guided by the American Burn Association.
- In the domain of research, contributes to research projects,
analysis, and distribution of findings. Facilitates protocol design
for accurate data collection, feedback, and analysis.
- In collaboration with the Burn Medical Director and Quality
Manager, designs, coordinates, and supervises the burn prevention
activities at community, state, and national levels in
collaboration with the Injury Prevention Coordinator where deemed
appropriate.
- Assumes the lead role in American Burn Association burn center
designation visit including data gathering and preparation;
maintains continued state of readiness, meeting and exceeding all
ABA requirements.
- Assists the Nurse Program Director, Trauma and Burn in
supporting the Trauma Program, including but not limited to:
educational programming/in-servicing, trauma outreach and feedback,
ACS visit preparation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an approved school of nursing, BSN required.
- Masters degree in nursing preferred.
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state
of Massachusetts.
- Current certification required or to be attained within
two-year period from 10-1-18 or from date of hire after 10-1-18.
Certification must be maintained while employed in this
position.
- Two or more years of previous burn experience is required in
one or more of the related fields of the ED, Surgical ICU or
Surgical Floor Nursing.
- Achieve Advanced Burn Life Support Instructor Status within one
year of hire.
- Achieve Trauma Nursing Core Certification Instructor Status
within one year of hire.
MINIMUM SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires ability to work effectively with physician, nursing,
administrative, support and ancillary staff.
- Requires ability to handle politically sensitive issues,
anticipate problems and issues, build and gain consensus, lead and
work with multidisciplinary teams, and effectively communicate
strategies, plans and financial results.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to focus detailed, concentrated effort to multiple
projects and re-establish priorities as necessary.
- Ability to effectively respond to time-sensitive issues.
- A high degree of social facility in obtaining cooperation and
support from a broad range of people.
- Initiative and ability to work independently.
- Previous leadership or program management experience
preferred.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Burn Program Manager reports to the Burn Medical Director and
the Quality Program Manager, Trauma and Burn Programs, with
oversight by the Nurse Program Director, Trauma and Burn. S/he is
expected to function independently at a high level.
